Description
Our traditional sailing-inspired boat shoes, in suede leather with canvas cutouts. Entirely handmade, the upper toe box is hand-stitched with a needle and thread. The complementary shades of army green and brown give off a lived-in, vintage effect. The inner lining is in smooth leather that supports the raw-cut canvas: an artisanal technique allowing the shoe to hold its shape over time.
Construction
It’s like a glove. The tubular moccasin construction is when the upper forms a leather tube that sits on top of the sole. It’s the definition of softness and flexibility, and feels like having a pair of slippers on your feet.
Color
To dye it, the grain leather goes through the ‘tanning’ process. It gets put into a turning wooden barrel, containing water and a brown dyeing solution. The water then gets brought to 60°C to allow the color to fully penetrate the leather. For the army green colors though, the cloth is dyed by soaking the fabric in different tanks. That way the color holds up over time, against wear and tear and light exposure.
Material
We’ve paired canvas, similar to panama cloth but more durable, with suede calf leather. The latter comes from the innermost part of the leather, which then goes through a sanding process. This consists of the abrasion of the surface of the leather, giving it that characteristic velvety effect. The resulting shoe has two souls, and is 100% handcrafted.
Sole
It’s made with anti-slip rubber, perfect for facing a boat surface; not to mention your everyday life. As the old sailing tradition encourages, the shape of this sole isn’t flat: indeed, it’s got a small heel.
