The bordeaux Friulane in ribbed boiled wool and rubber sole with visible stitching. They are traditional Friuli shoes that were originally made at home by ladies in mountain villages, then found new life in the Venetian canals: the gondoliers needed a comfortable and stable shoe that was also delicate on the wood. The hand stitching, with its irregularities, makes each shoe a unique piece. Comfortable and snug, with the tongue which covers up to the instep, you’ll barely feel them; perfect for relaxing at home after a day in the snow.
Made in Gonars (Italy)
The upper is sewn by hand, with a chain stitch, directly to the sole just like in the past: to this day there are no machines that can take a Friulian craftsman's place. The hand stitch makes the initial fit rather enveloping, but in a short time it adapts to the foot. The rubber sole and midsole are instead machine-sewn.
To obtain burgundy color, firstly the wool yarn passes through some tanks to color the fabric. Afterwards, the wool fibres are felted and then welded.
The rubber sole, with typical visible stitching, ensures a good grip. We wanted to recreate the texture of a bicycle tire, because originally the soles of the Friulane were made with old tires (today's are quite different from yesteryear's). The midsole is made of wool felt and latex to give you the comfort you want.
Boiled wool comes as a compact fabric; the wool fibres are felted and then welded (a process called 'fulling') to make a thick, warm and strong cloth.
