F. Volandri × Velasca

Tennis and craftsmanship: a match Made in Italy. Filippo Volandri, Technical director of the Italian national team, told us all about how tennis expresses itself through his own style: simple, yet elegant. That’s why he chose Velasca.

100% Cotton flannel
This cotton flannel has been specially designed for spring and summer: it’s super lightweight and soft to the touch. It’s made using fine threads and the brushed effect (that typically brings out flannel’s ‘fuzz’) is just barely there, resulting in a fabric with a sophisticated look.
We entrusted its creation to Albini 1876, a company based near Bergamo with a rich heritage spanning five generations, working to stay kind to the environment. They oversee the entire supply chain: from selection of the best raw materials to the direct supervision of every stage of production. Their cutting-edge machinery reduces emissions and water usage.

Care
This garment can be washed in the washing machine, on a low spin cycle that doesn’t exceed 30°C. Lay it out flat to dry to ensure it keeps its shape well.
If you’d like to be even gentler, wash it by hand: leave to soak for 5 minutes, rinse and wring it out while keeping it wrapped up in a towel to preserve the natural fibers.
Last tip from us: be conservative with the detergent and softener, there’s no need to overdo it. Store the clean folded garment in a cool dry place.

Design
This shirt is one of Filippo Volandri’s favorites. Technical director of the Italian national team, he picked this shirt out for our tennis-inspired capsule wardrobe: simple, elegant, and entirely Made in Italy.
It has a shifted armhole, a typical tailoring technique from Naples and Apulia that requires time and precision, resulting in a more comfortable piece that gives you room to move.
Seams have seven stitches per centimeter: high-quality shirts have narrower stitches because they’re more refined and resistant.
The flat fell seam is 3mm wide: the border at the bottom is small and fine, and the side stitching is narrow and elegant. To fell means to sew on the wrong side, taking the excess fabric, folding it under a sewing machine foot and closing it all. This technique requires a certain level of experience.
The buttons are made of mother-of-pearl trocas: a natural material derived from trochidae shells. Slightly opaque, it goes well with the sophisticated yet casual style of the shirt.
Where the side seam meets the hem we’ve added a gusset, a small triangle of fabric to reinforce the stitching.
The finished garment is then washed, so the shirt will stay as beautiful as you see it. Our artisans line up the fabric at the cutting stage and only wash the garment once it is complete, to ensure it won’t shrink in subsequent washes.

Made in Italy
We’ve always put our trust in the hands of the best local craftsmen. Afterall, Italy itself is like a huge open-air workshop. This shirt was sewn in Francavilla Fontana, in the Brindisi province. The Apulian district has a long history in the textile industry. Antonio and Valentina, owners of our shirt factory there, have worked really hard to build a business that today operates worldwide.
